Hello to everyone,
I have stumbled onto this forum in my quest for carburetor plating information. I mostly will be dealing with quadrajets obviously but, you know how things go. Maybe I might end up getting into this plating deal.
Right now I have nothing to start with. I am just absorbing info and already have some questions. First off, where do you get the supplies? I know the muriatic is somewhat easy to find. What about the phosphoric acid? Is this what is found in the various "metal prep" products? What kind of acid is used in aluminum prep products? Nitric acid? what about Tri sodium phosphate, is this an acid. (I can still get this out hear). Anyway, I guess the major idea is to end up with something that looks like the original finish and has a good protective quality. I think the q-jet carbs were just washed with chromic acid which just reacted with the zinc and other metals that was used at the time. I have no idea where to even begin to find "chromic acid".
If I can come up with a look that is somewhat similar to the original, that will be great. I also know that alot of the steel parts were cad plated and were bright and shiny. Some of the throttle shafts were coated with teflon. Any-way, it will be interesting to see what will work.
Have a nice day everyone and merry christmas!! :) :)
