Linear versus Switching Power Supply for Plating

Posted by admin on September 17th, 2009 at 10:05pm

I just purchased a Mastech HY3020E power supply for use in my CopyCAD kit for some motorcycle restoration projects.

I was surprised at how light it is and I find that the reason is that it is a "switching" power supply. The ad stated that it is good for charging batteries, but didn’t make any mention of suitability for . It was stated as having Constant Current mode, so that led me to believe it would work.

On doing some further research, I see that there is a Mastech model HY3020D that is more expensive, but is a "linear" power supply and stated as recommended for operations.

Can anyone tell me why a linear power supply would be better? What problems will I have with this switching supply? Should I return the switching supply and upgrade?
