How to prepare metal for plating?

I imagine this topic has been covered before, but I am having an awful hard time getting the "Plug ‘n’ Plate" kit to work. (I purchased both copper and nickel.) I have a 90-year-old sewing machine that I am restoring. It has steel parts that were originally nickel plated. The nickel plating has or is wearing off and the parts are beginning to rust. (I have been able to remove the rust from the parts already.) For some of these parts, this is not an issue as sewing machine oil will keep them from rusting after the restoration. However, there are other parts which should not be oiled if the machine is to be used. My question is – what is the best way to prepare these parts before trying to plate them? Some are as large as two by five inch decorative face plates while others are as small as 1/4 inch long by 1/8 inch wide screws (or smaller). Some parts are smooth and supposed to be shiny while others have a what looks to be a sand-cast finish. In otherwords, I have all types of parts and finishes to deal with and have no idea as to the best way to prepare them for plating. Can anyone help me?
