HF gun transformer upgrade

Has anyone thought about or tried to upgrade the HF powder coat gun transformer (the cheaper 17kv one) to a larger and more adjustable transformer. There are many guns out there that are the same body (probably made by the same people in China) but have a different voltage output. For example, the 50kv system here on Caswell is the same gun, but with an adjustable output. I would think you could do this if you had the right tranformer in it and avoid the cost of a new system, and ending up with the same gun anyway.
