Gold Plating over silver plated trophies

I am a complete newbie to this. I have 2 old silver plated trophies where the plate has been polished off in places. I would like to re-plate these trophies with gold. Can I re-plate over the silver or must the silver be removed first. These trophies have engraving on them, will the plating process cover the engraving? Please HELP
