Copy Chrome/Acid Copper on Plastic Grill

Hi. I am attempting to repair a plastic grill on a 1980 Olds Cutlass. The grill is ABS and was plated with either nickel or chrome. I don’t know which. I do know that it had a copper plate on it before the final plate. Anyway, I have repaired a few plastic areas with ABS, sanded it, degreased it and painted on the copper conductive paint where I repaired it. I actually took the paint outside the repaired spots so it would contact the original copper/nickel/chrome for conductivity. I plated it with acid copper and the whole thing takes the copper very well. I have 3 questions.

1. The copper conductive paint is very rough after it dries. This rough area shows through the copper once it’s plated. How do I resolve this. I’ve tried sanding and replating, but I’m not having much luck.

2. When I take the piece out of the tank, it is that pretty salmon pink color. I dip it in distilled water then let it dry. After about 5 minutes, the copper turns dark and ugly. Is this normal?

3. How much copper is enough before I use the copy chrome? Should I go for a heavy layer of copper, or a thin layer?

Thanks.
