a new guy Q about powder

I am new to powder and just bought the caswell 16kv gun to learn with. HF has powder I am sure the quality is not great but I am looking to learn spraying technique and dont want to waste money on expensive powder but I dont want to damage gun with low quality powder. So can low quality powder hurt a gun?
