copy chrome nuts and bolts cracking

September 27th, 2010 at 03:11pm Under metal finishing

Hi, I am new to this game. I hope someone out there can help. When I put a spanner to my copy chrome the coating cracks and chips off. I do not know if I am doing something wrong or copy chrome is hard enough. The nuts look very good and smooth. I have plated other parts but it seems when I put tools to chrome it cracks. Maybe I need to plate it with something else fifst. Please help.

Brass plated pot metal

September 27th, 2010 at 03:11pm Under metal finishing

I have a large ornate escutcheon from a 1949 TV that is brass plated potmetal. The name is molded into it. The channel knob(pot metal) also has the numbers groved into it. The brass is worn off to the copper and pot metal in places. No pitting. My concern will the letters and numbers be damaged in the brass re-plating. Should I just paint it with brass colored paint rather than chance damage to the escutcheon and channel knob? Thanks,Don

Show me your rig

September 27th, 2010 at 03:11pm Under metal finishing

I have my oven finished, Powdercoated some stuff… Debating buying a better gun but for the time being I am looking at better ways of hanging my parts.

I made a rail system out of some square tubing, I cut out a 1" slot in the middle and I have some wheels I am going to use in there.

This will work for most part but I already see the shortcommings of it. Hanging anything heavy is going to provide a challange etc.

I was looking at carts; I really like the idea of being able to have a cart I could roll around, have the parts hung off the cart, coated in one place and then rolled into the oven.

Does anyone have any pics of their rigs? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Tom

powder coating Motocross hubs and atv parts

September 27th, 2010 at 03:11pm Under metal finishing

HI i am a newbe on here, I have noticed how helpful everyone is on here. It seems a good base of knowlegable information for powder coating.

I am going to start powder coating as a hobby, mainly motocross and Atv parts for myself and friends. I have been doing research in to the processes involved, But iam struggling to get some information to get started.

Bike hubs are mainly cast aluminium, and are exposed to the elements, and struck with debris, so i need a coating thats hard wearing.

What types of powder would you reccomend? and what processes would you reccomend for best finishes?

Thanks

P.S any info greatly appreciated, Looking foward to getting started:D

Plating deep groves…

September 26th, 2010 at 03:10am Under metal finishing

I have been working towards getting a Copy-Chrome and a Flash Copper kit for doing my own plating for the pot-metal trim on my 1954 Buick Roadmaster project. I have been lurking here for some time reading and preparing my self. Step one was to see if I could even repair the pits and properly prepare the pieces for plating. Muggy Weld seems to work good, I just have to improve my technique. One thing to note for others is that you need to have it very clean, just like you would for plating. Sandblasting is not enough, I had a hell of a time getting some pits to fill right. Once I properly degreased and cleaned it really worked well.

Now, I have one piece that I’m told that most platers either won’t do or if they do….they won’t do well:

The middle plate part can be removed but will those ridges/recesses come out smooth?

Just the thought of repairing the pits gives me the willies as sanding is required, but my question is to you experts…Will this plate well, even and smooth in a home kit and how would you best setup your system to do it?

Reverse Osmosis Unit Question

September 26th, 2010 at 03:10am Under metal finishing

For all of the rinsing to do with distilled water is the reverse osmosis unit a good product? In the long run is it better than just always buying distilled water?

Nylon coating small parts

September 24th, 2010 at 03:07pm Under metal finishing

We are looking for a way to coating small lead fishing weights with Nylon using an automated/conveyor process.

I see a variety of small parts like shoe eyelets that are coated in this way.

Any assistance is appreciated.

My new PC gun just shipped!

September 24th, 2010 at 03:07pm Under metal finishing

I ordered this one.

Caswell Inc. – High Voltage Powder Coating System

I am looking forward to trying out powder coating. I can’t promise I won’t PC the dog’s food bowl. LOL I have been doing a lot of reading and have seen a lot of great work on this site. I just hate ordering anything. I like to walk out of the store with it. I am currently doing a cosmetic restoration on my buddy’s ‘81 Sportster. In lue of paying my for my work he bought my gun for me. I plan on making his bike my crash test dummy before tackling my own. The wife hates it when I do cashless jobs. I can’t explain to her it’s the same thing most times.

Anywho, Thanks everyone for your posts, pointers and pictures. I have learned a lot. Let’s see what happened next weekend when I have to put up or shut up.

Laters,
Ken
