Aluminum cathodes and bussbar cleanup

December 29th, 2009 at 07:27am Under metal finishing

Okay, how does everybody care for their bussbar and cathodes?

I have a thick white film that grows on the surface of the buss bar and the cathodes (that are out of the acid)

Marks during Dying Process

December 29th, 2009 at 07:27am Under metal finishing

I seem to be having the same problem with a few colours. The photo shows my pieces after sealing. As soon as I place the pieces in the dye I can see spots on the surface, it resembles grains of dirt. Then after sealing the spots have remained and result in slightly darker specks of the dye. It doesn’t happen every time, and my dyes have all been premixed and I stir them before pouring dye in saucepans for heating. Any ideas what could be causing this, it has just happened with the last three dye colours I have used.

How many square inches will 4oz of PnP solution cover?

December 29th, 2009 at 07:27am Under metal finishing

Greetings!

I realize this may be a hard question to answer with exact numbers, I’m just looking for a general guideline.

Approximately, how many square inches of Sliver Plating at a "normal" thickness will a 4oz bottle of PnP Silver Solution take care of? How about the Gold solutions (normal, fast18k, fast24k)?

The specific applications will be touch ups of worn off silver plating on older and vintage musical instruments. Also, silver plating the lip plate on nickel plated flutes, and gold plating the lip plate on silver flutes. Along with silver/gold plating of mouthpieces for trumpets/trombones/Saxophones/etc. Redoing the gold wash on the inside of bells. And so on.

Any and all guidance welcome :) thanks!

Question about my oven build

December 27th, 2009 at 06:20pm Under metal finishing

When the project first begun, I originally was going to make a smaller oven. I currently have 2 household ovens in my garage at the moment. And, I was going to strip those down to for there electronics. As usual I got carried away and now my oven frame is 6×5x5 OD. But, I am really happy with this new size. My question is are the 2 ovens I have now useless for these dimensions? I have tried my best to understand how the electronics work, but time and time again I fail. Also I will be using the oven for powdercoating and the walls will be insulated with fiberglass… I live in Hawaii so a lot of the materials are retarded expensive. I’m doing my best to keep this oven in my budget. So if i need more elements, or a controller of some sort please give me some advice. I will be moving into a industrial garage in a few months for my automotive business so electrically I imagine I should be good. I don’t want to sound like a total fail but if someone could literally list the electronics I need and where to get them on the cheap that would be incredible. In the mean time I’ll keep searching the forums in an effort to educate my electrical noobness.

Need help building a cheap oven. 2′x3′x6′

December 27th, 2009 at 06:20pm Under metal finishing

Ok so I have been lurking a bit trying to find information on oven building. I came across this oven design Home

Its around the size I would like to make mine but the price might be a tad bit of a problem. I would imagine that insulation would not be 60$ and i could salvage some from something. The sheet metal looks a little pricy as well and i was thinking i could probably cut some corners buy using hardi backerboard or whatever for the outside. The problem about the backerboard for the outside for me would seem to be building the oven out of both. As for all of the electrical components and lights could i salvage those from ovens?

I would like to build this as cheap as possible without having to buy too much stuff. Does anyone have any input on building one this size as cheap as possible? I Believe its a 2′x3′x6

Thanks for reading.

Hello to everyone,
I have stumbled onto this forum in my quest for carburetor plating information. I mostly will be dealing with quadrajets obviously but, you know how things go. Maybe I might end up getting into this plating deal.
Right now I have nothing to start with. I am just absorbing info and already have some questions. First off, where do you get the supplies? I know the muriatic is somewhat easy to find. What about the phosphoric acid? Is this what is found in the various "metal prep" products? What kind of acid is used in aluminum prep products? Nitric acid? what about Tri sodium phosphate, is this an acid. (I can still get this out hear). Anyway, I guess the major idea is to end up with something that looks like the original finish and has a good protective quality. I think the q-jet carbs were just washed with chromic acid which just reacted with the zinc and other metals that was used at the time. I have no idea where to even begin to find "chromic acid".
If I can come up with a look that is somewhat similar to the original, that will be great. I also know that alot of the steel parts were cad plated and were bright and shiny. Some of the throttle shafts were coated with teflon. Any-way, it will be interesting to see what will work.
Have a nice day everyone and merry christmas!! :) :)
